Artist Statement

Jill C. Weisberg is a contemporary artist based in South Florida. Her paintings and large-scale public installations call attention to feminine types and stereotypes interlaced with more challenging notions of feminist theory. The reflective materials she uses colors the silhouettes of dancers, vintage female stereotypes, and advertising models which produces a double-effect. Holographic, metallic and iridescent pigments are just as seductive, easily transferable, and as fleeting as the unnamed women whose forms they fill and adorn.  As Weisberg’s mined images lure the viewer with the vibrancy of every glittery color, they also tempt the imagination as a kind of blind peep show. What becomes truly desired is not the women in her images, but a sense of control over what their bodies and situations appear to represent. The materials and colors that she uses are a nod to a giddy, teenage excitement of appearing “grown up” as well as the endless urge to reinvent the self by simply changing color. As a native of Hollywood, Weisberg’s choice of materials is heavily informed by the hot, vibrant natural environment and the sensuous cultural backdrop of South Florida.
